Homeward Bound serves more than 200 homeless children every year in our programs for homeless families. In 2011-12, 85% of the families we served moved out of homelessness and into stable housing. Children living at our family centers participate in outings and other enrichment activities. Volunteers like members of Phil Lesh & Friends help spruce up our facilities, make and serve meals, maintain our garden and more. Homeless veterans find support at New Beginnings Center, which reserves 16 beds for adults referred by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. More than two dozen adults living with mental illness make their home at Voyager Carmel Center. We provide shelter and support to more than 100 homeless youths (age 18-24) each year. Fresh Starts Culinary Academy offers job training open to Homeward Bound residents and students from the community. Our culinary students have moved to employment with Safeway, Starbucks Coffee Co., Beth’s Fine Desserts, local restaurants and Marin caterers. The Key Room event space offers on-site catering and employs graduates of our job-training programs. A broad spectrum of Marin residents, businesses and community groups helped open the Next Key Center in 2008. We present a monthly series of chef events in The Key Room with celebrities like PBS-TV Chef Joanne Weir and Chef Michael Mina. Our event space at The Next Key Center includes a demonstration kitchen with a full range of audiovisual services. Our catering team can prepare everything from an elegant banquet to coffee and pastries for a morning meeting. Committed staff members bring laughter, optimism, and a vast array of core gifts to their daily work. Support from local businesses provides a strong foundation for Homeward Bound’s work on behalf of the community. In-kind donations like these backpacks from the GJEF Junior Board provide vital help in serving our residents. Thank you! Warren Buffett is a Homeward Bound shareholder! He kicked off our nonprofit IPO launched to help build the new Oma Village family program.
