Marin Economic Commission honors Homeward Bound
Homeward Bound of Marin has been honored for Community Leadership and Service by the Marin Economic Commission.
The announcement marks the first time a non-profit agency has received this award, which also recognized Homeward Bound's Executive Director, Mary Kay Sweeney.
"We are thrilled to be acknowledged by the Marin Economic Commission. Our mission includes strategies to help people become more economically self-sufficient and integrated into the larger community," Sweeney said.
Homeward Bound has developed job training programs as an integral part of its services, offering food preparation classes at its Fresh Starts Culinary Academy, which is based at New Beginnings Center in Novato. The classes are offered in partnership with the Marin County Office of Education's Regional Occupation Program, which was honored by the commission in the category of Workforce Preparedness.
Residents at Homeward Bound facilities also gain work experience through its Fresh Starts catering business and by producing the trademark Halo Truffles, as well as Halo HomeMades jams, jellies and salsas.
In bestowing the awards, the commission stated that they were developed "to honor those who contribute to a vibrant and sustainable Marin County economy, and to acknowledge our dedicated community leaders."
Along with Homeward Bound of Marin and the Regional Occupation Program, other honorees are Marin Organic, SPG Solar Inc., Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District and the Bolinas Community Land Trust.
