Volunteers make it possible for us to carry out our daily work on behalf of the community. We depend on our volunteer helpers in many ways, from making dinner for a homeless shelter to coaching kids on the great game of chess.

If you’d like to volunteer with us, please email Andrea Rey, Community Engagement Coordinator, at volunteer@hbofm.org or call 415-382-3363 x212. At the moment, we are looking for people to fill key roles:

Meal Providers – Jonathan’s Place

Stylist/Barber – Shelter and housing programs

Our programs depend on your support and we’re deeply grateful to more than 1,000 people who volunteer at Homeward Bound every year.

Novato Volunteers Create Housewarming Baskets

Residents moving out of Homeward Bound shelters often find themselves pondering a long shopping list for household Volunteers Jennie Gill and Gail Schreuderessentials. That’s where volunteers Jennie Gill and Gail Schreuder enter the picture.

For three years, the two Novato women have packed and delivered “move-out baskets” with new sheets, blankets, and pillows, along with basics for the bathrooms and kitchen.

Gail says the shopping trips hark back to her first months of marriage. “I remember going to Safeway to get a basic pot just to boil water. I did not have even this one useful thing in my kitchen,” she recalls.

Both women have been active members of Marin Charitable Association, which issues grants to dozens of organizations providing services for children in Marin, including Homeward Bound. They came for a tour and hatched the idea of wanting to help people settling into new homes.

“We want them to get their place set up with things that are new, that they will be able to use over and over,” says Jennie. “It’s a kind of housewarming.”

Mount Tam Quilt Guild Sews for Good

Mount Tam Quilt Guild

The abundant creativity of the Mount Tam Quilt Guild has provided dozens of wonderful gifts for residents at Homeward Bound of Marin.

Members make and donate quilts for adults and children in every possible color and theme, from autumn colors with falling leaves to cartoon fire trucks or purple dinosaurs. “We’re fabric addicts, so we enjoy making them and we like knowing that they make someone’s day a little nicer,” said Terry Giancaspro, a longtime member.

Their monthly meetings include presentations on quilting techniques and plenty of fun activities, with occasional speakers from nonprofits that have received donated quilts. We’re deeply grateful for their amazing contributions.
